Finland reduces homeless population to 0.08%: social policy

Fonte 3rd sector Observatory

With a well-planned social policy, Finland has become the only country in the European Union the number of homeless people is decreasing.

The policy was implemented in 2007 and, since then, the government has managed to reduce homelessness to 40% of the homeless population. It is estimated that in the coming years there will no longer be people in a vulnerable situation in the country.

Remembering that Finland has about 5.5 million inhabitants, and only 0.08% of the population is currently homeless.

first try didn't work

Prior to the current policy, the government created short-term housing. They were shelters made available to homeless people, who had access to the property for a short period, 6 months to 1 year.

But that first measure didn't work very well. Many people who joined the program were unable to find a job during the period they had the right to housing and ended up returning to the streets.

Policy provides for ending vulnerability

Now, with the new actions, the government provides psychological, physical and financial support so that people can get back on their feet and re-establish themselves in society.

Authorities strengthen ties with the homeless and their families to convince them to get off the streets as well.

Finally, a group of popular houses and apartments was created, which are provided to families who need it most.

The Finnish government's proposal is to end the vulnerability by 2027.
